Welcome to St. Philip's Episcopal Church in historic Quantico, Maryland. We are members of the Episcopal Church in North America.
St. Philip’s Episcopal Church was originally known as Quantico Chapel and was the
Fifth Chapel of Ease from Old Green Hill, Stepney Parish, which is located on the road to Whitehaven, Maryland Route south of Green Hill Country Club on the banks of the Wicomico River.
The original church building was the same design as Old Green Hill and Old Spring Hill, of the meeting variety. It was equipped with wooden stoves for heat and open pews. In 1914, after seventy years of use, the congregation desired a more modern building and so the old Quantico Chapel was razed and St. Philip’s Episcopal Church as it stands today was constructed in the cruciform design.
St. Philip’s Church, rich in history and tradition, continues to witness to and for the ministry of Jesus Christ in this part of God’s wide Kingdom, true to its call to serve others in Christ’s name since 1845.
The current church building was built in 1914. The architectural structure of the building reflects much of the theology of the Episcopal Church in America.
The building is in a cruciform shape reflecting our theology of our salvation achieved through the crucified and risen Christ. The many stained glass windows depict not only the life of Christ and His followers but also windows depicting the surrounding culture in which the church was established. So, to that end, yes, St. Philip's has a stained glass window with a muskrat! There is also a stained glass window with a chicken and bread. It was common for small rural churches built during that time to include images of the day-to-day life of the individuals who gathered for worship.
St. Philip's Episcopal Church is a member of the Diocese of Easton and the Episcopal Church in America.
