ST. PHILIPS EPISCOPAL CHURCH • QUANTICO, MARYLAND
Rooted in faith and tradition. Growing in Christ. Welcoming all. Serving our community.

For more than 180 years, St. Philips Episcopal Church has worshiped and served in the small Eastern Shore community of Quantico, Maryland. Today, we are a small, active congregation with a strong sense of family.
We know one another. We care for one another. We worship, work, laugh and occasionally disagree together, and when someone needs us, we show up.
We believe that intimacy is one of the particular gifts of a small church.
As we seek our next Priest-in-Charge, we are not simply looking for someone to fill a position. We are looking for a priest willing to enter into the life of this community, help us deepen our faith, and discern with us where God is calling St. Philips next.

Shared ministry is part of our identity
Serving our neighbors through community partnerships, children’s outreach, Church Mouse and more
Multigenerational and expanding
Stewarding our four-acre campus along Quantico Creek with care for God’s creation.
During our recent discernment, we gathered material from several years of parish reflection, previous search work, individual responses and congregational conversations.
What surprised us was not how much we disagreed.
It was how consistently we described the same church.
Again and again, our members described St. Philips as a place of:
We are a congregation where coffee hour can sometimes feel almost as important as what happens before it. That is not because worship matters less. It is because relationships matter enormously here.
We cherish our Episcopal identity and the traditions handed down to us, but we do not believe faithfulness requires standing still.
Our history matters to us. So does our future.
Rooted in faith and tradition, St. Philips welcomes all to grow in Christ, care for one another, and share God’s love through service to our community.
We encounter God in worship and Holy Eucharist, but also in a hospital room, around a fellowship table, through music, beside a grieving family, while serving a neighbor, and in the simple act of welcoming someone through our doors.
Our discernment has led us toward several priorities for our next chapter:
Deepening our spiritual life • Strengthening our community presence • Welcoming new members and younger generations • Developing music as worship and outreach • Strengthening our Christian foundation • Growing shared ministry
We are interested in growth, but not simply numerical growth. We seek growth in faith, service, relationships, participation and spiritual depth as well.

We gather each Sunday at 10:00 a.m. for worship grounded in the Episcopal tradition. We value thoughtful preaching, prayer, Holy Eucharist, music and the rhythms of the church year.
Our discernment repeatedly identified thoughtful, engaging preaching as something parishioners cherish and hope to find in our next priest.
Our growing multigenerational choir includes singers ranging in age from 12 to 85, with younger and older voices learning alongside one another.
Our Music Director has begun expanding our musical vocabulary through contemporary and multicultural hymns, and the congregation has embraced the opportunity to stretch into more diverse music.
We see music not only as part of Sunday worship, but also as a way to create relationships beyond our congregation.
We also hope to expand opportunities for Christian formation, helping adults and younger people explore Scripture, Episcopal tradition and the relationship between faith and everyday life.

Outreach is not an accessory to parish life at St. Philips. It is part of our identity.

Our ECW-operated thrift shop raises resources for ministry while bringing neighbors onto our campus week after week.

Our Children’s Outreach Ministry supports nearby Westside Primary School with supplies and other needs.

Our approximately four-acre campus beside Quantico Creek gives us opportunities for environmental stewardship, hospitality and expanded ministry.

Our free lecture series welcomes parishioners and neighbors for engaging speakers, learning, and community conversation.

Our weekly Men’s Discussion Group creates a welcoming space for conversation, fellowship, and connection.

Our ECW brings women together in fellowship and service while supporting local charities, community programs, and the ministries of St. Philip’s.
Sees pastoral care as central to priestly ministry.
Connects Scripture and Christian tradition with the lives we actually live.
Helps us deepen our understanding of Scripture, Christian faith and Episcopal tradition.
Takes time to understand why something matters before changing it.
Recognizes and develops the gifts of capable lay leaders.
Helps strengthen our relationships with younger people, families and our community.
Builds healthy relationships with Vestry, congregation and Diocese
Brings patience, wisdom, compassion, stability and humor.
We are looking for someone whose gifts complement ours and who wants to undertake ministry with us
Discernment works in both directions....
Our greatest asset is our people. We care about the well-being of our priest, not simply the work our priest performs.
Music Ministry, ECW, Church Mouse, Guest Lecture Series, Children’s Outreach, Men’s Discussion Group and other ministries give us foundations from which new ideas can grow.
Members already lead ministries, manage finances and property, organize outreach, participate in worship, support music, plan events and care for one another.
Our campus beside Quantico Creek includes our 1914 sanctuary, parish facilities, rectory and both the town of Quantico and St. Philip’s cemeteries.
Careful financial stewardship and a significant entrusted bequest have strengthened our ability to invest intentionally in priestly ministry.

Our sanctuary’s stained glass reflects not only our Christian faith, but the rural Eastern Shore community that built St. Philips.
Which means, yes, we have a muskrat in stained glass.

And a chicken and local produce honoring our agricultural roots.
One phrase appeared repeatedly during our discernment.
So we asked a deeper question:
We treasure Episcopal worship and sacramental life, music, seasonal observances, fellowship, hospitality, outreach and the traditions connecting today’s congregation with generations who worshiped here before us.
But we also recognize that tradition and “the way we’ve always done it” are not necessarily the same thing.
We seek a priest who will first listen and learn, then help us discern where continuity gives us strength and where change may help us follow God more faithfully.

Deeper faith and Christian formation
Stronger connections with younger generations and families
Continued development as worship and outreach
New ways to serve our neighbors
Healthy, broadly shared ministry
A model appropriate to the gifts and needs of a small Eastern Shore parish

A model appropriate to the gifts and needs of a small Eastern Shore parish
Consistent with Diocese of Easton guidance
We want enough time together for a priest and congregation to develop genuine relationships, undertake meaningful ministry and learn what level and model of clergy leadership will best support St. Philips over the longer term.
We welcome experienced priests.
We are also open to the possibility that St. Philips could be a wonderful place for a newer priest to develop their gifts. Strong lay leadership, a supportive congregation and a parish willing to learn alongside its priest may give us something meaningful to offer clergy at different stages of ministry.
St. Philips is already worshiping, serving, singing, caring, learning and loving.
Nor are we simply looking for someone to preserve what already exists.
What is God calling St. Philips to become, and how do we get there together?
